Venting

Reshared post from +Linus Torvalds
Venting.

I don't think I can talk about "security" people without cursing, so you might want to avert your eyes now.

I gave OpenSUSE a try, because it worked so well at install-time on the Macbook Air, but I have to say, I've had enough. There is no way in hell I can honestly suggest that to anybody else any more.

I first spent weeks arguing on a bugzilla that the security policy of requiring the root password for changing the timezone and adding a new wireless network was moronic and wrong.

I think the wireless network thing finally did get fixed, but the timezone never did - it still asks for the admin password.

And today Daniela calls me from school, because she can't add the school printer without the admin password.

Whoever moron thought that it's "good security" to require the root password for everyday things like this is mentally diseased.

So here's a plea: if you have anything to do with security in a distro, and think that my kids (replace "my kids" with "sales people on the road" if you think your main customers are businesses) need to have the root password to access some wireless network, or to be able to print out a paper, or to change the date-and-time settings, please just kill yourself now. The world will be a better place.

.. and now I need to find a new distro that actually works on the Macbook Air.

PS: This device doesn't float any object. You have to place the special magnetic disc that comes with the unit, inside of the objects you want to float.

Reshared post from +Mashable
Apple just sent out invitations to an event next Wednesday to be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Besides the time and location information, the invite only says “We have something you really need to see. And touch.” The words are superimposed on what is almost certainly an iPad.

It’s all but a done deal now: Apple will unveil the iPad 3 on March 7. The event is due to begin at 10 a.m. Pacific Time (1 p.m. ET)

The media sometimes reminds me of the "vulture" tow-truck drivers in SA. The way they all hover around Madiba's residences whenever he gets ill annoys me.

To the Media,

We are Anonymous. We have been watching those of you who call yourselves "The Media" with great disdain as you fail to meet our expectations at doing what the people demand, reporting news. For too long the media has given power to those who do not deserve it and did not rightly earn it. By reporting about the luxurious lives of movie stars and billionaires you have knowingly and carelessly given power to those who do not care about anything else but their own egotistical lives. By being exposed to such narcissistic and pompous behaviour through the media many people have been brainwashed by your propaganda into believing that these insignificant and meaningless stories are news. We are here to say, no more.

No more shall the media pick and choose what the people hear as news. No more shall we allow you to report on Whitney Houston when Syrian rebels push towards a civil war. No more shall we allow you to report on Jeremy Lin when the tension in the Middle East is mounting. No more shall we allow you to report on the Kardashians's marital problems, Beyonce's baby drama or Charlie Sheen's drug problems when countries around the world are facing devastating financial bankruptcy. These entertainment time-wasters have proven to be no more than a distraction to the people, as important news and headlines never get the justice they deserve. We are Anonymous and we are here to say, you can no longer choose what is front-page material.

Operation Occupy the Media is an ongoing operation supported by Anonymous all around the world to liberate the people from the distraction of major news media and the entertainment news that occupies the front pages of your websites, newspapers and magazines. We shall be targeting all of your social media outlets and discussion boards to bring attention to actual issues that should be priority news. We will make it our duty to report the vital news while you, the ones in charge of informing the people, report on trivial, insignificant nonsense. We are tired of being misinformed by the media. We are tired of people having a deceiving sense of the word "Beautiful." We are tired of the people focusing more on entertainment than their own rights and privileges which are being taken away slowly but surely. We are tired of people having a false sense of priority through the reports by the media. And now, we are taking action! - http://anongroup.net/occupymedia.html

We are Anonymous
We are legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Expect us

The Streets of Van Gogh

The Streets of Van Gogh

This is Arles, which is only a short drive from Montpellier and less than an hour from the Côte d'Azur. The streets are quaint and quiet. There are a few tourist areas, but after a few steps in a random direction, you're back in the old streets. I needed to stay for longer for more exploration (!), but I did my best to make use of the short time I was there.

'Heart of the Home' Kitchen Concept

It is an intelligent, amorphous, interchangeable cooking surface that adapts to user needs. When using the Heart of the Home one simply places one’s ingredients on the surface. The appliance then analyses the ingredients and presents a list of suitable recipes. After deciding on a recipe, the user marks an area with his hand to determine how large the cooking area should be. Then the desired depth of the surface is created by simply pressing the hand against the malleable material. After achieving the required width and depth it’s just a matter of setting temperature and time with a simple touch of a finger.

BMW Tandem moto

Simone Modella has designed a four-wheeler off-roader named the BMW Tandem. A conceptual design two-seater motorcycle that take inspiration from autos, mixing some of the advantages of both.

The BMW Tandem is powered by the 193 horsepower engine (found in the BMW S1000rr motorcycle).

We will not see the futuristic Tandem anytime soon, but it’s nice to have an idea of the trends of a BMW-badged off-road vehicle.

This sounds like a more elegant solution than dark energy to me..

This sounds like a more elegant solution than dark energy to me..

Reshared post from +Jonathan Langdale
Massimo Villata of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) in Pino Torinese, Italy, describes dark energy as “embarrassing,” saying that the concept is an ad hoc element to standard cosmology and is devoid of any physical meaning. Villata is one of many scientists who are looking for new explanations of the Universe’s accelerating expansion that involve some form of repulsive gravity. In this case, the repulsive gravity could stem from antimatter hiding in voids.

Under general relativity, gravity is the result of following a spatial geometry (change in the normal shape of space) caused by local mass-energy. This theory holds that it is the altered shape of space, deformed by massive objects, that causes 'gravity', which is actually a property of deformed space rather than being a true force. Although the equations cannot produce a "negative geometry" normally, it is possible to do so using a "negative mass". The same equations do not, of themselves, rule out the existence of negative mass.

Both general relativity and Newtonian gravity appear to predict that negative mass would produce a repulsive gravitational field. In particular, Sir Hermann Bondi proposed in 1957 that negative gravitational mass, combined with negative inertial mass, would comply with the strong equivalence principle of general relativity theory and the Newtonian laws of conservation of linear momentum and energy.
